ICMR Report- India’s 56% of People are Diseased Due to Unhealthy Diet

ICMR has released 17 dietary guidelines that every individual should follow to stay healthy. It has also stated that such high percent of diseased population could be prevented by following these guidelines.

The National Institute of Nutrition has stated that up to 80% risk of type 2 diabetes could be reduced by following a healthy diet. Furthermore, the institution has stated that by including physical activities, people can safeguard themselves from Hypertension and coronary heart diseases.

The institution has further stated that a significant risk of premature death can be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle. It has also brought to the notice, the various reasons for these health diseases. These are; significant increases in the intake of processed food, added sugar, fats, and carbohydrates.

The NIN has also guided people to decrease salt intake, use fats and oils sparingly, exercise appropriately, and consume less sweets and highly processed meals. To avoid obesity, it was also advised to have a healthy lifestyle and read food labels to make educated and nutritious eating decisions. A multidisciplinary expert team headed by Dr. Hemalatha R, Director, ICMR-NIN, established the Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs), which have now passed many scientific reviews.
